Give the Gift of Literacy

Supporting the Good Counsel Learning Center has long term effects on individuals as well as our communities as we teach and encourage our students in their academic pursuits. We are a non‐profit that helps people, no matter what age or background, with math, English, and citizenship classes.  Our first priority is to enroll disadvantaged children who lack technology to join our online classes so they can catch up to pre-pandemic expectations.

Many of our students are immigrants and refugees who become our community partners as we learn about each other and foster a more diverse cultural experience. As we help them learn our language and acquire skills, they become our economic partners as customers, retailers, and contributors to our community's workforce.

Darlette Hoppe, Mother of Three

We have utilized the Learning Center at Good Counsel for many years and we could not be more pleased. The individualized teaching is provided in a creative way that reinforces and then builds on each child's needs. Participation in this program has increased our children's confidence and academic performance in school. We love the Learning Center and all the kindness that we have received there.

Lindsay Solheid, Marquette University

Towards the end of first grade I started going to the Learning Center for extra help with my studies. While there, Sister Lucille observed something amiss with how I was processing the written word, and suggested I be tested for a potential reading/visual impairment.  It was discovered from this test that both of my eyes were not reading in tandem, rather they were processing the written word in two different ways. Through Sister Lucille we discovered MN Vision Therapy. After retraining my eyes through therapy and continuing with the Learning Center, I was able to get back on track and caught up with my grade level. Because of the incredible caring and teaching of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Learning Center, I would not be where I am today, a freshman at Marquette University!

Robert Kluntz

I attended the Center when I was 26 as a non-reader in the 70s. It was a life changing experience for my family and me. I could read menus, go shopping, and read to my boys.

Laurie Jongbloedt

My son made wonderful strides in reading and math and it helped build his self-confidence. I recommend the Center to any parent whose children need help. (Attended in primary and intermediate grades.)
